ABOUT OUR FIRM
HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT
With more than 65 attorneys in offices in Washington, Oregon, and California, Bullivant Houser has an intimate understanding of the jurisdictions up and down the West Coast. We bring that institutional and industry knowledge when advising clients on ways to stay out of court in the first place and when resolving complex disputes as they develop.
Hands-On Trial Experience
When the need arises, our litigators have earned an excellent reputation for cost-effectively managing complex litigation. Bullivant Houser’s trial lawyers have more experience in evaluating, preparing, and trying cases than almost any other West Coast law firm. Our team goes to battle for many of the country’s largest companies and insurance carriers when claims are in the millions and the stakes are high.
Bullivant Houser proudly employs a diverse group of attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and support staff—all of which bring unique backgrounds, experience, and expertise to bear when providing the best and most cost-effective representation to our clients.
CORE VALUES
HISTORY
Founded in 1938 in Portland, Oregon by V.V. Pendergrass, Charles R. Spackman, Jr., and R.R. Bullivant, Bullivant’s early focus was on banking and corporate while Spackman was noted as an excellent trial lawyer, an early foundation for the firm’s focus on trial practice.
Preceding Bullivant’s founding, but paralleling the growth of legal markets in the urban west, was McClanahan and Derby, later to become Derby Cook Quinby & Tweedt, in San Francisco. Derby Cook as the firm became known, was widely regarded for its admiralty and maritime practice. In 2000, Bullivant merged with Derby Cook, tracing the firm’s history back to 1906.
Bullivant’s traditions in insurance, business, and casualty law are underpinned by the firm’s long tradition of excellence in trial practice. Derby Cook’s influence is still felt through the firm’s successful maritime, admiralty, and transportation practices.
