Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Order Restricts Court Hearings and Operations

03.30.20 | INSIGHTS

By Jeanne F. Loftis and Leta E. Gorman

On Friday, March 27, 2020, Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice Walters issued an order that amended the current health restrictions already in place for Oregon courts (issued March 16, 2020) that limit the number of people coming into Oregon courtrooms and courthouses. In the Amended Order, the Chief Justice stated that, in addition to continuing the Level 3 health restrictions set in place in the March 16, 2020, order, she is seeking legislative authority to (1) extend or suspend timelines currently set by statute or rule, and that apply after the initiation of both criminal and civil cases; and (2) ensure the ability to appear in court by telephone or other remote means in most circumstances. If that authority is granted, a supplemental order will be issued by the Court.

Justice Walters further ordered that, with exceptions, proceedings and trials scheduled to begin earlier than June 1, 2020, are postponed, and no trials will be scheduled to begin before June 1, 2020.
