Bullivant proudly presents 2009 Arts & Entertainment Client Spotlight "Lucia Neare's Theatrical Wonders"In celebration of the Seattle 2009 Americans for the Arts Conference, Bullivant is proud to present Lucia Neare, Founder and Director of "Lucia Neare's Theatrical Wonders," a non-profit creation dedicated to providing free, large-scale, site-specific, theatrical performances to all members of the general public. A collaborative effort with a team of artists, technicians, choreographers, and performers, including theatrical director Cathy Madden, musical director Matt Goodrich, and technical director, David Verkade, the "Wonders" meet the audience where they are and transport them into living poetic worlds intended to inspire play, dreaming, and friendliness, while awakening a spirit of endless possibility. The pieces are purposely large, not for grandeur or spectacle, but to awaken wonder in an audience accustomed to staring at tiny screens and inanimate boxes. These site-based, participatory outdoor performances include dozens of performers, huge mobile set pieces, larger-than-life costumes, and live music and dance. "I am interested in gift giving, in ideas of family, reverence, transportation, innocence, memory, and celebration. All of my Wonders are deeply inspired by magical realism and speak the language of myth and fairy tale. My work is deeply influenced by my own operatic training and years living in southern India, as well as the visions and poetry of Hildegard von Bingen and William Blake, the audacity and grandeur of P.T. Barnum and Busby Berkeley, the heart and whimsy of Dr. Seuss, and the discoveries about human coordination and learning of Joseph Chilton Pierce and F. M. Alexander. These artists and thinkers all expanded the realm of human possibility, which is a primary goal of my work. I am devoted to creating free, living, joyful experiences for public audiences that offer vivid infusions of whimsy and inspire hope and expansive thinking—that gifts can spring forth on the streets and in our lives, that it is possible to fill the air with love through the power of our intent. In the broad scheme, the things my artistic team and I are doing are small, but in these times, I believe it's vital to feed the creative life of our community, to help bring forth a New Renaissance." —Lucia Neare
