Jess Millikan of Bullivant's Insurance Industry Services Group will be presenting at the Loss Executive Association's Annual Meeting. Her presentation will cover:
Forewarned is Forearmed: Code Upgrade Coverage and Structural Upgrade Triggers in the IBC and The IEBC
The 2009 International Building Code is in the process of adoption by the states, and it makes radical changes with respect to the requirements for repair of existing buildings as compared with prior editions of the code. The changes make it more complicated (and expensive) to determine whether structural/seismic/wind upgrades are required at all, and will likely result in more upgrades being required – not merely to the damaged portions of buildings that are being repaired, but to the balance of the building outside the damaged area that would previously have been allowed to remain untouched.
During this session, we'll discuss the differences between the repair requirements in the new code and the old code, and the practical impact that the changes will have on claim operations. We'll anchor the session with specific case studies, discussing how the loss would be analyzed under the "old" code and under the "new" code, and how the new code would impact the company's obligations. Attendees can expect to receive practical information about the implications of the new code, and some tools they can use in working with their engineering consultants to investigate and adjust claims.
This workshop will be chaired by Jess B. Millikan, Esq., Shareholder of Bullivant Houser Bailey PC, San Francisco, CA. She will be joined on the panel by Terrence F. Paret, Senior Principal, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc, Emeryville, CA; and Chris Roza, Senior General Adjuster, FM Global, Los Angeles, CA.
